Lake Siskiyou Fish Report for 2-26-2012

It has been a strange week of weather up here in the Siskiyou's but that has not stopped the fish from biting. Lake Siskiyou was hot this week, with two trips landing over 50 Trout combined. Trolling Rapala's (Cd 5's and floating broken backs) fast and slow in the west end of the Lake produced constant action and easy limits. The Trout size ranged from 1/2 pound to 2 pounds and the fish are in excellent shape, great for the BBQ. Simply wrap them in tinfoil with thinly sliced lemon and fresh cracked pepper, then place then on the grill, and cook until the meat falls off the bones, MMMMMMM. The weather is pretty chilly and slightly windy in Mt Shasta, but not enough to keep you off the water.
The Klamath River fishing is not producing as many fish (8 to 10) but your chances of landing a Steelhead/Trout in the 2 to 6 pound class or bigger is much higher. Back trolling a jet diver with a threaded nightcrawler or bouncing bait on the bottom were the most effective methods for my clients this week. You practically need to hit them on the head (or Kiss them) to get them to bite right now so moving slow thru fishy areas is a must. The river is very cold (low 40's) and weather fronts have been moving through our area all week. We experienced morning temperatures in the low 20's and by afternoon temperatures in the low 60's. Wacky weather!
If you’re looking to do some fishing and wanting to mix it up, a Klamath River-Lake Siskiyou or McCloud Reservoir combo trip is a great option right now.
