When Is the Best Time to Fish Shasta Lake?

Every fishing guide hears the same question: When is the best time to fish?

For Shasta Lake guide Scott Caldwell, the answer isn't as straightforward as many anglers expect.

"That's the one thing about fishing," Caldwell says. "I've fished long enough that I've had good months every month."

In other words, there is no single perfect season.

Spring is often considered one of the most enjoyable times to be on the water.

"Today it's super comfortable out," Caldwell says. "It's not blazing hot. This spring-type weather is certainly very enjoyable, and it has been fishing pretty well."

Summer brings deeper fish but often excellent action.

"I would say it is easier to catch trout in Shasta Lake when they go deep," Caldwell says. "It does seem to lend itself to being a little bit better time."

While anglers may have to fish deeper water, the fishing can be outstanding.

Winter offers a different kind of opportunity.

"When the lake gets really cold, you can catch some bigger fish off the surface," Caldwell says.

Some of the lake's largest trout are caught during cooler months.

"You might catch a 10-pounder trolling the surface," he says.

Fall can also be productive as cooling temperatures bring fish back toward shallower water and tributary areas.

Ultimately, Caldwell encourages anglers to focus less on finding the perfect month and more on getting out on the water.

"It's kind of a pick-your-poison thing," he says. "There's good quality time to fish."

The reality is that Shasta Lake's size, depth, and abundant forage create opportunities throughout the year.

"Shasta Lake fishes year-round," Caldwell says. "That's one of the things that makes it special."

For anglers planning a trip, the best time to fish may simply be the next day available on the calendar. With an experienced guide and the right seasonal approach, Shasta Lake offers rewarding fishing in every season.
