What Makes Shasta Lake Different?

California has no shortage of fishing destinations, but according to veteran guide Scott Caldwell, Shasta Lake stands in a category of its own.

"Shasta Lake is a huge body of water," Caldwell says. "It provides excellent eating fish. There is a huge abundance of bait fish that all the fish in the lake eat."

That forage base is one of the keys to the lake's success. Massive schools of threadfin shad provide food for trout, salmon, bass, and other gamefish.

"Because they have this abundant food source, these fish do, on average, tend to be bigger than other lakes in the area," Caldwell explains.

The lake supports an impressive variety of species. Anglers can target rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, king salmon, spotted bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, panfish, and more.

"There's kokanee, there's king salmon, there's brown trout, rainbow trout," Caldwell says. "There's multiple species of catfish. There's just so many different species of fish."

The sheer size of the reservoir also contributes to its productivity. As California's largest reservoir, Shasta offers deep water, extensive habitat, and room for fish to thrive.

"It is the biggest reservoir body of water in California," Caldwell says. "It's deep. It holds a lot of water. It has a lot of food. It has a lot of species of fish."

Another advantage is the lake's ability to handle fishing pressure.

"It can handle a lot of traffic," Caldwell says. "It's not a bothersome thing when the lake gets busy. You can still catch fish."

That sets it apart from many smaller lakes, where boat traffic can negatively affect fishing.

For Caldwell, the combination of size, diversity, and forage creates something special.

"What you can get out of Shasta Lake is that it's just a unique fishery," he says.

Whether anglers are seeking trophy trout, hard-fighting bass, or quality table fare, Shasta Lake continues to earn its reputation as one of Northern California's premier fishing destinations.
