Scott Caldwell's 33 Years on Shasta Lake

When anglers book a guided fishing trip, they're not just paying for a boat ride. They're investing in local knowledge that can only come from years spent on the water. Few guides on Shasta Lake can match the experience of Scott Caldwell.

"I've been guiding on Shasta Lake for 27 years," Caldwell says. "I've been fishing Shasta Lake for 33 years. The very first year I moved up to the area here in Northern California was 1993."

What started as a passion eventually became a profession. Today, Caldwell is one of the longest-tenured guides on the lake, helping anglers catch everything from trout and salmon to bass and panfish.

"Shasta Lake has just been one of the places that I've always enjoyed," he says. "It is a wonderful fishery. It offers a multitude of varieties of fish from multiple species of trout, multiple species of bass, multiple species of panfish. The lake has everything, and it's huge."

Caldwell's credentials go beyond simply spending time on the water. He maintains all required California guide licenses and permits and holds a special permit through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

"I am a legal fishing guide on Shasta Lake," Caldwell explains. "The Forest Service requires permits, insurance, and other requirements that allow me to guide on the lake."

More important than paperwork, however, is the experience he has built over decades fishing Northern California waters.

"I've owned a boat for almost 40 years," he says. "I've been a fisherman since I was a young boy, and I turned my passion into something that I enjoy sharing with other people."

Over the years, Caldwell has focused on a handful of fisheries, including Shasta Lake, Lake Siskiyou, McCloud Reservoir, Whiskeytown Lake, and the Klamath River.

"By doing that, I've become really good at those bodies of water," he says. "They've all treated me very well over the years."

For visiting anglers, that experience can make a significant difference. Instead of spending valuable fishing time searching for productive water, clients benefit from three decades of local knowledge, seasonal patterns, and proven techniques.

"Shasta Lake fishes year-round," Caldwell says. "It's a good place to fish, and it's close to home."
