Shasta Lake Guided Fishing Trips

Shasta Lake is where Scott Caldwell has spent most of his 33 years fishing Northern California and all 27 of his years guiding. It is the largest reservoir in California, ten miles north of Redding, with four main arms fed by the Sacramento, McCloud and Pit rivers and Squaw Creek. That size is what makes it fish year-round: there is always a bite somewhere on the lake, and knowing where the fish have moved this week is the whole job.
What we fish for. Rainbow trout and big brown trout that feed on the lake's huge schools of shad, landlocked king salmon, kokanee salmon, and spotted bass, plus largemouth, smallmouth and crappie when the season is right. Winter and spring trips are mostly trolling for trout and salmon in the main body and the river arms. Summer moves the fish deep and the trips start early. Fall is the best big-brown fishing of the year as the fish come up shallow to chase bait.
How a trip works. Trips run out of the launch ramps around the lake, chosen for where the fish are that week. Scott provides the boat, rods, reels, tackle and food. You bring a valid California fishing license, a jacket, sunscreen and sunglasses. All ages and experience levels are welcome; most trips are set up so a first-timer and a lifelong angler can both have a good day. Fly fishing trips and casting instruction are available on request.
SC Guide Service holds a special use permit from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and carries the licenses and insurance required to guide on Shasta Lake. Recent trips and what they caught are posted on the fish reports page, and the Shasta Lake by season article covers what to expect month by month.
