Klamath River - December 4th, 2008
RECORDED:    45 °    FISHING: Excellent
As it is with most activities, the more time you put in, the more you get out of it. Fishing is one of those activities, where time on the water, eventually pays off. The last couple of times the fishing on the Klamath River was good, but the Steelhead were small. Yesterday, I put in a few hours of fishing, in the late afternoon, and I was rewarded with five nice 3/4 to 1 1/2-pound Wild Steelhead and one 8-pound Hatchery Steelhead. The wild steelies were all caught on the hotshot and worm combo, and the big boy took a large stonefly imitation, fished under an indictor. Most of the time fish stories are about the one that got away, but I guess I got lucky this time. I was drifting out in front of the Fishhook restaurant when my indicator went under the water; I pulled up figuring I was snagged on the bottom. I thought this because I was watching the bushes that were scraping along the side of my drift boat. When I felt I was clear of the brush, I turned to see my indicator had gone under. To my surprise, the snag was a nice Steely and the fight was on. I was using a very light 8-foot Rogue Rod 4wt fly rod so most fish feel big. The fight was not very long and I brought the Steely to the side of the boat. I was able to see it was nice fish, but I wasn’t to sure how nice. The moment that followed is what all fisherman dread, the feeling of the line going limp and the fish swimming away.  As you can guess that’s what happened, I quickly brought my line up to check it, cursing all along, I made another cast hoping to get a second chance. Rarely do you get second chance but luck must have been on my side and another fish took my fly. This time I was ready. The second hookup felt bigger and the Steelhead immediately ripped off all my fly line and got fairly deep into my backing, before I was able to turn him and gain some back. This give and take session lasted for about 15 minutes, before I got him close enough to see that he was much bigger, than I thought. Finally, Mr. Steelhead made one big jump followed by a short burst, but he was done and this time when he came along side of the boat I was able to slide the net under him and enjoy the moment. Time on the water paid off!!

McCloud Reservoir - November 24th, 2008
RECORDED:    40 °    FISHING: Great
McCloud Reservoir is kicking out some nice Trout. I fished with my friend Doug his daughter Chelsie and my son Conner this weekend and we landed over 30 Trout, for two days fishing. Trolling Seps Dodgers with a worm trailers worked very well both days. On Sunday, I trollling flies picked up a lot of fish too. Bottom line is that the Trout at McCloud are hungry and are no too hard to catch. The Trout are in the 1/2 pound to 11/2 pound size range but great for the BBQ.

Lake Siskiyou - November 21st, 2008
RECORDED:    40 °    FISHING: Great
Katelynn Gail Caldwell was born on Monday 11/17 at 2:35pm she weighed 7 pounds Mom and baby are doing wonderful. They came home on Wednesday and are working there schedules out HAHA!! Conner and I Fished Lake Siskiyou, Sunday (11/16) afternoon and caught a few Trout for the BBQ, we trolled a Sep's dodgers with a worm trailer very slow in in the west end of the lake. Fishing is pretty easy if you use that set up and troll in an S pattern at 1mph or slower. We grilled the Trout with some lemon juice and a little pepper they came out very tasty and fresh.

Klamath River - November 16th, 2008
RECORDED:    68 °    FISHING: Excellent
This past week I fished clients on the Klamath River. On Monday (Nov. 10), I took Abby, a Yreka native, and she landed over a dozen Steelhead/Trout, the biggest going about 2 plus pounds. On Saturday (Nov. 15), I fished Dave and Debra Tresch of Long Beach and they landed 20 fish, combined. Both days this week, we used a combination of glowbug flies (fished under and indicator), plugs (hotshots & crawdads) and worms to hook all our fish. I have been drifting from the Hatchery at Irongate Dam down to the Klamathon Bridge. The weather could not have been more perfect this week with morning temps in the high 30's and warming to near 70 in the afternoon. I am most happy when I can row the boat in shorts and a tee-shirt and to be able to that this time of year is awesome. This is one of the best time of the year to come fishing on the Klamath River, no crowds, excellent weather and plenty of hungry Trout and Steelhead to keep you busy. If you are looking to take a mess of Trout home for dinner McCloud Reservoir and Lake Siskiyou are excellent places to fish as well. Limiting out on a combination of Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout is the norm. Hope to hear from you, FISH ON!!

McCloud Reservoir - November 4th, 2008
RECORDED:    42 °    FISHING: Excellent
The cold rainy weather has not slowed the Trout bite at McCloud Reservoir at all. I took my son Conner fishing on Sunday and we caught and released 20 Rainbow Trout in a few hours of fishing. We caught all the Trout trolling a Seps dodger with a worm trailer. The key to getting bit is going slow (1mph or less) and trolling in an S pattern. Most of the Trout we landed were fat 14 to 16-inchers, we did land a few that were close to 18 inches, and lost a couple that were over 20-inches.

The Klamath River is fishing well for Steelhead now that the Salmon are spawning, glowbugs under an indicator, sidedrifting or bouncing roe, hotshot and worms will catch fish. The rain has not muddied the river and it is flowing at 1350cfs so now is the time to go.

McCloud Reservoir - November 1st, 2008
RECORDED:    45 °    FISHING: Excellent
Despite the poor weather the fishing at McCloud Reservoir is red hot. I took my friends Jim and Joe yesterday, and we had constant action all afternoon. We dropped the boat in at noon and no more than 100 yards from the dock we had two Rainbow Trout in the boat. The trout were easy pickins as we trolled a Sep's dodgers with a worm trailer thru the surfacing rainbows. Trout were everywhere gorging themselve on midges and caddis flies, that were hatching all afternoon. There were some occasional rain showers, as well as some blustery winds, but for the most part, it was just cool and overcast. We did land a couple of Brown Trout, one on a k-7 kwikfish at a depth of 30 feet on the downrigger, the other was on the dodger. Most of the Rainbows were in 14 to 17-inch range with a few smaller ones and a few bigger ones mixed in. Now is the time to go to McCloud once the snow starts it becomes very difficult to get into the lake.

Klamath River - October 24th, 2008
RECORDED:    39 °    FISHING: Great
Salmon fishing has remained steady this past week. I have been fishing my clients for Salmon in the mornings, and then switching over to Steelhead/Trout, after the Sun hits the water. Back-trolling K-15 Kwikfish first thing in morning has been very effective, as well as producing good size Salmon. The last 5 trips, clients have landed Salmon, weighing in the 18 to 30 pound range. Later in the morning, as the sun starts to hit the water, we have switched over to bouncing roe, and found the bite to be fair. The Salmon are now starting to spawn in the River and Steelhead are feasting on loose eggs. We have been Fly-fishing, egg patterns under an indicator, and have been landing quite a few Trout, in the 1/2-pound class. We have been hooking up on bigger fish (2 - 8 pounds), but not landing very many of them. The weather has been awesome, cold (high 30's) in mornings then heating up in the afternoons (mid 70's). It is a beautiful time to be on the Klamath River. As we head into Winter, the Fall colors are out, making opportunities for some spectacular photos, as well as some fantastic fishing.

Klamath River - October 19th, 2008
RECORDED:    40 °    FISHING: Great
Salmon fishing this past week has been prettygood despite the full moon we had during the week. The Salmon fishing has been best first thing in the morning. Roe and K-15 kwikfish have been producing some good action. I have been targeting steelhead on the flyrod in the afternoon and the action has been very good. we are seeing Steely's in the 1 to 6 pound class. A double glow set up under an indicator has been the trick to getting bit. There are a lot of Salmon and Steelhead in the upper part of the river I am doing combo trips until the Salmon bite dies off, call now to get in on the action. I have dates avaliable this week.
