Klamath River - May 6th, 2009
RECORDED:    60 °    FISHING: Excellent
Friday my clients and I floated the upper Klamath River below Irongate Reservoir in the afternoon and found the Steely/Trout bite to be very good. Despite wet rainy conditions the guys hooked up many times, on the hotshot worm combo and a double fly combo under an indicator. Most of the Steely/Trout were in the 12 to 16 inch range, we did land one Steelhead that was 20 inches and 3 pounds. The best fish of the day was a fat Steely in the 4 to 5 pound class that took a nymph while drifting fishing, unfortunately when he jumped he spit the fly, but better to hook a nice Steely than not too.

Klamath River - April 30th, 2009
RECORDED:    65 °    FISHING: Excellent
Fishing on the Klamath River is excellent. My client George and I hooked over 50 Steely/Trout while drifting from the Irongate Hatchery to the Klamathon Bridge, yesterday. We put 30 fish in the net while backtrolling a Rebel Crawdad plug on one rod and a Luhr Jensen Hotshot worm combo on the other. We caught fish all day in the 12 to 20 inch range, these Steely/Trout are fat and healthy and hungry. They put up a great battle on light tackle. We were using 9 foot custom made 2-6 pound spin rods made by Rogue Rods matched up with Pflueger President size 30 spin reels spooled with clear Yo-Zuri hybrid 6 pound line. We were the only boat on the River and the weather was near perfect. It is time to go fishing if you have the chance.

Klamath River - April 19th, 2009
RECORDED:    65 °    FISHING: Excellent
My good friend Guy Ives and I fished the Klamath River this past Friday and found excellent action on the Steely/Trout. We fished the upper section of the river, from the Hatchery to the Klamathon Bridge, and between the two of us, we caught and released 21 fish. The Steely/Trout are in great shape and fighting hard, many of the smaller fish (9 to 14 inches) fought as well as the larger fish (15 to 20 inch). Bouncing bait on the bottom and the Hotshot worm combo caught all our fish on this day. Overall this week, two trips on the river, netted over 40 Steely/Trout, out of 60 plus hook ups. We had the river practically to ourselves this week, as we saw only 2 other boats. The weather has warmed up considerably this weekend, nearing 80 degrees on Saturday. Spring is now really here; within the next 30 days we should start seeing the Salmon flies begin to hatch.

Klamath River - April 15th, 2009
RECORDED:    38 °    FISHING: Excellent
The Klamath River is hot for half-pound Steelhead and Native Trout, with a few adults mixed in. Sunday, my son Conner and I, hit the river for 4 hours, in the late afternoon and landed 12 Steely-Trout, the largest reaching 20 inches. On Tuesday, my clients Everett and Mike landed 22 out of 30 plus hook-ups, the largest reaching 16-17 inches. All the Steely-Trout were caught while back-trolling, either a Rebel crawdad plug or a Hotshot worm combo. The weather has been all over the place for the last six weeks; from sunny and 70 degrees to 29 degrees and snowy. Wind has been the biggest factor over the same time period, and it has been making it difficult to fish. Monday, I took Everett and Mike to Lake Siskiyou and when we arrived at 7:30, the lake was glass, but within 30 minutes the wind started picking up. We worked the lake pretty hard trying to locate the Trout, but by mid-afternoon we had only 5 bites, landing two nice 18 inch Trout (Trolling Gold Sep’s dodgers with a worm trailer).  The wind was gusting, at times, up to 20 miles an hour, making it difficult to fish, the lake had also turned over in the last few days, leaving lots of floating debris. Needless to say, Monday was not ideal fishing conditions, but it was Sunny and we did not get skunked. We did get some great photos of Mount Shasta and we watched a Bald Eagle beat up a Turkey Vulture then take its lunch.

Lake Siskiyou - February 7th, 2009
RECORDED:    50 °    FISHING: Excellent
If you’re looking for some nice Trout, Lake Siskiyou is one place you need to go. I have been fishing the lake for the past week and each day produced some great fishing as well as some quality Trout. My clients landed 24 Trout on Thursday and Friday trolling Seps kick dodgers (smeared with krill paste) with woolly bugger worm trailers. Thursday was quite a challenge due to the weather; a mix of icy cold wind rain and snow made it hard to troll but the Trout didn’t care as the guys landed 8 nice Trout (3 Browns and 5 Rainbows) in the 1.5 to 3 pound range. Friday was a complete 180 turn, as the weather went from crappy the day before to extremely pleasant warm sun and no wind. The guys hooked up over 20 Trout landing 17 of them. All the Trout were Rainbows 2 of which topped the 5 pound mark. We caught all the Trout while trolling in an S pattern at  .7 to 1.3 mph, in 25 to 45 feet of water.

Klamath River - January 25th, 2009
RECORDED:    25 °    FISHING: Good
Steelhead don’t care that the temperature outside is 25 degrees, as long as they get to eat, they are happy. My friend Nolan and I hit the river for a few hours this afternoon and landed a fat hatchery Steelhead, the fish got his meal but to his surprise it had a hook in it. Mr. Steelhead made a valiant effort to spit the hook, but the only place he was headed was to the BBQ. Once we got him in the boat, Nolan and I preceded to get off the water as fast as we could. The weather was turning ugly and neither of us brought any gloves. Bare wet hands and 25 degrees; doesn't feel good on the fingertips. Soon there after Mr. Steelhead became grilled lemon Steelhead and was on the table 3 hours after being landed. MMMMM good.

For those of you wondering where I have been the last 20 days I was in a booth at the San Mateo and Sacramento Sportsman’s Expo's promoting my Guide Service and the Klamath Ranch Resort and RV Park. If you get a chance next year I recommend going and checking the shows out.

Klamath River - January 5th, 2009
RECORDED:    30 °    FISHING: Good
Winter Steehead season must be here; cause over the last 20 days, the weather has been crappy, freezing cold temperatures (0-32 degrees) with wind rain and snow mixed in. Frozen boats parts, iced up guides, numb fingers and toes would keep most normal people inside near the fire, but not a Winter Steelhead fisherman. Anyone who has met a Winter Steelheader would surely agree, there is something not quite right about a person, who gets excited about nearly freezing body parts off, just so he or she can catch a fish. The Winter Steelhead is not just any fish. I call them fresh water Tuna with a bit of Marlin mixed in. The reason being is they put on one hell of a fight when you hook them, long drag burning runs and ariel displays that get your heart racing. Yesterday, 10-year-old Delaney joined the ranks of the Winter Steelheader, as she landed a nice 3 1/2 pounder on a hotshot/worm combo. It was not much after that Gary her Dad landed his first od the day, on a crawdad plug. The weather was cold and ugly on Sunday but that is the norm for this time of year. Dad and daughter had a good day as they landed two more adult Steehead in the 5 to 6 pound class and only lost one other fish. The hookups where spread out throughout the day but the quality of the fish was excellent.

Klamath River - December 30th, 2008
RECORDED:    35 °    FISHING: Fair
I fished the Klamath river with my son and clients on the 29th and 30th and we found the fishing to be tough. The guys landed 8 fish over 2 days. We used crawdad plugs and hotshots with worms to catch all our Steelhead/Trout. The water is very cold low 40's, making the fish bit slow to bite. tThe air temperature has been in the 20 to 40 range although, yesterday, was the best day for weather clear skies and no wind. Our area had been hit pretty hard by mother nature the last couple of weeks, so it has made for some tough fishing conditions. Currently, it is sunny, but cold, so the stable weather (barometer) should get the fish biting more. Happy New Year and Fish On!!!

Klamath River - December 11th, 2008
RECORDED:    50 °    FISHING: Excellent
Its all about the garden hackle. Today was the best day of the week on Klamath river. My friend Guy Ives and I caught and released 16 Steelhead/Trout using a variety of methods. The biggest Steely of the day was the first one, a nice fat 4 pound wild buck that took the hotshot worm combo. The last fish of the day, (a nice 2 plus pound wild Steely) I caught on a small nymph fished under an indicator (fly bober). In between, the garden hackle was the king, taking another 3 pounder and many 1/2 pounder plus Steelhead/Trout. Earlier in the week, I took my friends Jen and Matt and they landed some nice steelhead up to 4 pounds.  Fly fishing and back trolling the hotshot worm combo was ticket on Tuesday. The weather has been cold in the morning and sunny during the day perfect for fishing!!

Klamath River - December 8th, 2008
RECORDED:    35 °    FISHING: Good
The Rebel crawdad plug was king. Yesterday, I fished the Girarde's, John and his son John, on the Klamath river. They caught all out their fish on the Rebel crawdad plug while backtrolling. We fished down river past Horse creek and found the action to be on the slow side, we laned six fish the best being a 22-inch Wild Steely the rest were in the 10 to 16-inch range. I'll be back on the water tomorrow fishing up near the Irongate hatchery. The weather is pretty cold in the mornings now (20's) in the morning but warming up (40's) by afternoon.
